On the 15th of September, Nichelle Nichols made her second trip aboard SOFIA – the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy.
SOFIA, according to its official website, is “…the largest airborne observatory in the world, capable of making observations that are impossible for even the largest and highest ground-based telescopes.”
Nichelle first participated in the SOFIA initiative in 1977, and was excited and honoured to be invited back. We reported on that last month and if you’d like to read that article just click Nichelle’s name in the Nebula Cloud to the side (or below if you’re reading this on your phone).
The wonderful TrekNews.net, who frequently have up to date news and features on the Trek universe, have a great interview with Nichelle conducted just prior to her trip a few days ago. The article can be found here and it’s full of Nichelle’s good cheer and positive energy. It’s hard to believe this inspirational human being had a mild stroke back in early June. If you’d like to learn more about the SOFIA mission you can find information here aswell as at the NASA SOFIA page on the official NASA website right here, where you can read about all the past missions.
Nichelle was one of many who live tweeted from the flight, the link is part of the TrekNews feature.
Nichelle, you’re awesome, and we love you.
